My First Time

Cafe Lua’s “First Time” art competition recently came to a close. I loved seeing the different directions the artists took with the theme. This is my entry, which I was inspired to make after playing with the negatives I scanned from my mother’s 70s photos. I was sharpening and exaggerating the faults in the film, and loving the overemphasised grainy texture. What I failed to articulate previously is that seeing her in her 20s in these photos kinda spun me out, as I could put a face to the stories she has told of her life before kids, and visualise her as someone my age. So the image I entered was called, “The First Time I Really Understood That She Was Young Once Too.”
